Since its launch (2009), free malware protection tool Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) has become the world's second most popular security package.  Even more surpa big change for a company regularly criticised for how it managed Windows' security.

While much of that may be down to the cost, compared with much of its competition, it's also a well-designed anti-malware tool with both anti-virus and anti-malware capabilities.

Available for Windows XP (Service Pack 2 and higher), Windows Vista and Windows 7, and in both 32- and 64-bit form, Microsoft Security Essentials is part of the Genuine Windows program, and can only be used on consumer PCs.

Defender for Windows 8, Windows RT, Windows 8.1, Windows RT 8.1, and Windows 10 provides built-in protection against malware. You can't use Microsoft Security Essentials, but you don't need to—Windows Defender is already included and ready to go.

CCleaner is a free trial program focused on PC system optimization, privacy and registry cleaning.  And it’s been around for a long time!  We love it.  It removes unused files from your system allowing Windows to run faster and freeing up valuable hard disk space. It also cleans traces of your online activities such as your Internet history, cookies, and other speed-killing files.  For those who want to go the extra-mile, Google “CCleaner’s original name”. Yes, same great performance, with a better marketing team…  They also offer deluxe  versions of the software, which we find outstanding for around $20 (click here to review full version).  We mention this as an alternative because it comes with many more useful tools; file recovery, hardware analysis, and a few other great tools.
